Lincoln is known for the elegance and luxury of its lineup. In short, “affordable” isn’t usually part of the vocabulary—but this time it is, as the American automaker is reportedly working on a fully electric vehicle within reach of most budgets.
There are still a lot of “maybes” surrounding the topic, but it seems the luxury division of Ford has every intention of introducing an affordable EV. The speculation comes from an interview with Hagerty magazine, where Ford’s president discussed the future of the brand—particularly a new platform designed to underpin an electric SUV. When asked whether Lincoln was also part of the plan, he replied that “the brand offers a certain potential to welcome a 100% electric, affordable entry-level model.”
Fierce Competition
Cadillac, Lincoln’s biggest rival, is well ahead when it comes to electrification. However, Lincoln appears to be considering a slightly different strategy. According to Ford’s president, offering only fully electric vehicles isn’t the answer. He believes it would be wiser to build a mixed lineup that includes EVs, of course, but also hybrids and plug-in hybrids. In any case, the goal is to make these models as financially accessible as possible—and that’s what could give Lincoln a competitive edge.
A Bright Future for the Brand
Lincoln has been enjoying an incredible resurgence in popularity over the past few years. The automaker has put significant effort into refining its brand image. Its vehicles are no longer just “dressed-up Fords.” Instead, Lincoln has shown boldness and creativity, making the brand more attractive than ever—and this is just the beginning. I believe the best is yet to come for the American luxury marque.
